Stop Before It’s Too Late!

Hard to believe, but I’m sure you’ve been lied to.  More than once.  And by people you have never met.  Let me give you a moment to shake that off.

Over it?  Good.  Now let’s expose the lies for what they are.  In the plumbing world, the most blatant of all lies people are told is that of the “flushable” wipe.  Ahh…takes me back to the days of old when my mom was cleaning my rear.  Regardless of the nostalgia and sparkling clean feeling these might give you, they are a fraud.  These wipes are no more flushable than any regular wipe.  They will get bound up together in your very own waste line causing a blockage or at the very least get sent downtown to the city processing plant and gum up their works.  Do not ever flush any wipes.  Throw them in the trash.  While we are on the subject, flush waste then toilet paper for smooth operating.

Do you like bacon?  Who doesn’t?!  Well vegans of course but I’m not talking to that group about this particular lie.  Bacon has grease.  What do you do with it when you are cleaning up?  Looks pretty runny, so just pour it down the drain.  WRONG!  Grease and other fat may go down easy but as it is with our arteries, it can gum up the works later.  When grease or fat is hot, it resembles oil.  When it cools, it returns back to its solid state and it is a bit sticky.  Pour the hot grease down your drain and everything else semi-solid could get stuck to it.  Another blockage waiting to be unclogged.

I love cleaning toilets, said no one ever!  Toilet cleaning is down-right nasty.  What makes it a bit easier is bleach tablets.  You cannot put these in the tank.  (The tank is the part with a lid and all sorts of other thing-a-ma-jig’s in it…in case you were confused for a moment.)  You can only put these little tablets in the bowl of your toilet so make sure you get one with a holder or sticky back.  You will prematurely wear out the seals if you put the tablet in the tank.

Garbage disposals were initially advertised to consumers claiming that you didn’t have to throw away food waste.  Not all food waste is created equal.  Items like peelings aren’t able to be ground up as fine and will get stuck to that grease and fat you’ve been pouring down.  Peelings, nuts, uncooked carrots and other fibrous foods are not meant to go down your garbage disposal and will put premature wear and tear on your appliance.

Now, don’t get defensive.  If it was your dear old granny who told you about sending your apple peels down the garbage disposal, it’s not her fault.  She didn’t know any better.  Share with her this new found wealth of information.  Don’t stop there, tell the rest of your family and your friends.  Heck!  Tell your neighbor!  Too many people are unaware.  The truth must be known!
